New Publication: "No longer sidelined? Football fandom, belonging, and the boundaries of Europe" in Journal of Contemporary European Studies
We’re pleased to announce the publication of our latest research in the Journal of Contemporary European Studies. This study shows how football fandom can influence European identities and foster a sense of unity and belonging across the continent. Our findings suggest that football fans are more inclusive in their perception of what constitutes Europe, pointing towards the important role of cultural integration through football.

Exciting Publication Alert: "A European Public Sphere United by Football" in JCMS
We’re thrilled to announce the publication of our latest research in the Journal of Common Market Studies. Our comparative quantitative text analysis investigates how football media across Germany, Norway, Poland, and Spain contributes to a European public sphere. Resulst show extensive, but selective media coverage that leaves many parts of Europe on the sidelines of the football discourse. New paper out! "Becoming European Through Football Media?" in the International Journal of Sports Communication
As part of the text analysis of football news media, our study of German online news sites and their coverage of European football was published in the International Journal of Sports Communication. The paper titled “Becoming European Through Football Media? Representations of Europe in German Football News Coverage” is available at https://doi.org/10.1123/ijsc.2023-0004.

Survey of fans and non-Fans started in four countries
Our comparative survey of fans and non-fans in Germany, Spain, Norway, and Poland was recently launched. The FANZinE team has created a Twitter thread with further informaion and links to all language versions of the survey. Participation is possible until mid-march.

First paper out! "Researching Football, Identity and Cohesion in Europe"
We are happy to have our first project paper published in the inaugural issue of the Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy Journal. In the paper called “Researching Football, Identity and Cohesion in Europe” we explore the intertwined relationship between identity and social cohesion in the context of European football. Talk for Studium generale, JGU Mainz
Tobias Finger and Jonas Biel of the FANZinE team were asked to present a lecture in the “Europe - Ideas and Identities” series at JGU Mainz’s Studium Generale. The topic of their talk was “Football, Identities, and Cohesion in Europe” and can be viewed in German here.

FANZinE at the UACES 2022 Conference
As part of two panels organised by the FANZinE-Team at the 52nd Annual UACES Conference we presented the latest version of our paper “Becoming European through football media?”. We thank the other contributors to the panels Alexander Brand, Andrea Cattaneo, Jacob Kornbeck, Dobroslaw Mankowski and Jan Zglinski.

Panel and paper presentation at the 2022 Sport&EU Conference in Lausanne
The FANZinE project team organised a panel including a presentation of the preliminary results of their sports media analysis at the 2022 Sport&EU-Conference in Lausanne. In addition to our own presentation, we were happy to receive contributions from Alexander Brand on the EUFoot-Project, Jacob Kornbeck on EU antitrust law in sports, and Borja Garcia on the reaction to the European Super League project.

FANZinE keynote and workshop at the FORTHEM Winter School 2022
As part of the “FORTHEM Winter School on Belonging and Non-Belonging in Europe” organised by the University of Jyväskylä, the FANZinE team gave a keynote on “European Belonging on Football” and held a workshop on “Measuring People’s Feeling of Belonging to Europe”. Together with the attending students and other contributors we explored the importance of Football for a connected Europe and developed ideas to measure the elusive concepts of identity and belonging. It was a great opportunity to get in touc with students and teachers from all over Europe and the world. We thank the organisers for a very fruitful event.

FANZinE project finally started
The research project finally started in Jul 2021. We are happy to get going and to begin the journey towards investigating the nexus between football, identities and social cohesion in Europe. Further updates will follow as we progress along our research agenda.
